Privacy Policy

In one sentence

Austral sends nothing anywhere. It makes no network requests at all. Everything it records stays in your browser, on your computer, and you can export or delete all of it with a single click.

This policy explains that in detail, including the two honest caveats that do exist — because we would rather you hear them from us.

1. Who we are

Austral is a browser extension that helps you stay well while working at your computer: it blocks distracting sites and records, locally, how your time is spent.

2. Austral makes no network requests

The extension does not communicate with any server — not ours, not anyone else’s. There is no analytics, no error-reporting SDK, no external fonts, no CDN.

This is not a promise you have to trust: it is verifiable. Open Chrome’s network panel with the extension installed and you will see no requests coming from it. Our release build fails automatically if any networking code is found in the package.

The direct consequence: we have no way to collect, see, sell or share your data. This is not policy — it is the product’s architecture.

3. What is stored in your browser

Everything below lives in Chrome’s local storage, on your machine.

Your settings

The list of sites you blocked, the categories you enabled, the keywords you added, and the state of the main switch and focus session.

Activity log

  • When you try to open a blocked site (domain only, plus date and time)
  • When you start and end a focus session
  • When you add or remove a site from your list
  • Your optional answer to the anxiety check-in

Time log

How long you spend on each domain, aggregated per day. This is on by default, and we explain it during onboarding before any counting begins. You can turn it off at any time from two different screens — Time and Data — and choose whether to delete what was already recorded.

Time is counted only while Chrome is in the foreground and the tab is active, and counting stops after 30 minutes without any tab or page change. It is a deliberately conservative approximation.

What is never recorded

  • Full addresses. We store youtube.com, never youtube.com/watch?v=.... This is enforced by an automatic check in the code and covered by tests.
  • Page titles
  • Page content, text, forms, passwords or images
  • Cookies
  • Your IP address
  • Any identifier of yours

Austral cannot read the content of the sites you visit — not by choice, but because the extension requests no host permissions and injects no code into pages. That is a property of the package, not a promise.

4. Two honest caveats

Chrome sync

Your settings (site list, categories, keywords) live in Chrome’s own sync storage area. If you use Chrome sync with your Google account, those items are replicated by Google, within your own account, to your other devices.

Austral does not perform that transfer and has no access to it — but it happens, and it is only fair that you know. It is governed by Google’s privacy policy. If you do not use Chrome sync, nothing leaves your machine.

The activity log and the time log are not kept in that area: they are never synced, under any circumstances.

The anxiety check-in

On the block screen, Austral optionally asks how anxious you feel at that moment, on a scale of 1 to 5. Your answer is stored on your computer alongside the activity log.

This is a self-report, optional, with no clinical validation. It is not a measure of anxiety, not a diagnosis, and not health monitoring. You may never answer it, and nothing about the product changes.

We declare this item as health information on the Chrome Web Store out of caution, even though it never leaves your computer.

5. Your rights and how to exercise them

In Austral’s options page, Data tab:

  • Export everything — downloads a JSON file with the complete activity and time logs. One click.
  • Delete my history — erases the activity and time logs. One click and one confirmation.
  • Stop time tracking — with the option to delete what already exists.

Uninstalling the extension removes all of its local data. If you use Chrome sync, settings may remain in your Google account and can be removed through Google’s own tools.

Because we never receive or store any of your data, we have nothing to hand over, correct or delete on request: it is already with you, and only with you.

6. How long data is kept

The activity log and the time log are automatically deleted after 90 days. Your settings remain for as long as you want them.

7. The austral.life website

The website is separate from the extension and handled separately.

We use an analytics tool that uses no cookies and collects no personal data, only aggregate visit and page counts. There is no visitor profiling, no cross-site tracking, no advertising.

If and when this changes, this policy will be updated beforehand.

8. Third parties

Austral shares no data with anyone, because it has no data to share. We do not sell data. We do not use data for advertising. There are no processors, sub-processors or data partners.

The extension is distributed through the Chrome Web Store, operated by Google under its own policy.

9. Children

Austral is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, of any age.

This policy is written to comply with Brazil’s LGPD (Law 13.709/2018), the GDPR and equivalent legislation.

In the current version of the extension, we carry out no processing of personal data: none of your data reaches us. The data described in section 3 is created and kept exclusively on your device, under your control.

For the website, processing is limited to aggregate, cookie-free statistics under legitimate interest in understanding visit volume.

11. Changes to this policy

If Austral ever offers user accounts, cross-device sync or integrations — features that would require transmitting data — this policy will be updated before launch, and none of it will be enabled without your explicit, specific consent.

The date at the top indicates the last change.
